While browsing Instagram recently, I came across the vibrant, whimsical work of muralist Mandi Caskey, also known as Miss Birdy. Her art immediately caught my eye, so I invited her onto the Artist Academy Podcast to share her story.
Mandi started out painting tunnels for fun in college after a spontaneous graffiti hangout sparked her interest in street art. Despite pressure to follow a more “traditional” art path, she stayed true to her style and eventually built a career creating large-scale, fantasy-inspired murals for cities, festivals, and corporate clients.
In our conversation, Mandi explained how she finds clients, manages applications for mural calls, and runs her nonprofit, Catalyst Columbus, which transforms overlooked spaces in Ohio into bold public art.
If you’ve ever wondered how to turn a love for art into a sustainable business, Mandi’s journey offers plenty of insight and inspiration.
